LET SCIENCE GUIDE YOUR WAY TO...
By Dr Megan Chircop
If you have not tried grass-fed beef fillet, then I highly recommend it. A bit expensive but every mouthful is worth it. A real beefy flavour that is absolutely melt in your mouth. In my view it has a lot more flavour and it superior in tenderness than grain-fed beef. Try both and compare for yourself.
In this recipe we served slices of grilled grass-fed beef (cooked medium to keep it juicy) with a light creamy mushroom sauce over a bed of spiralised swede (also known as rutabaga). This meal clocks in at just over 300 calories with more than 30g of protein plus a load of micronutrients from all those vegetables. We recommend you include this recipe on your meal plan for weight lose and/or muscle building. N.B. It is also gluten-free.
Now this meal is not what you classically think of when you think of diet food. Your natural instinct is a plain piece of lean steak, with no sauce, served with steamed broccoli. At Body Sculptors Australia, we are not interested in plain boring, tasteless food. We want every meal to be enjoyable so that losing weight and building muscle does not feel like it is hard work. Our concept is to nourish your body with real food that is absolutely delicious for optimal health and well-being whilst achieving the body you desire.
The verdict: Grain-fed vs grass-fed beef
Red meat (grass-fed and grain-fed) is incredibly nutritious. It is a massive source of high quality protein. It also contains nutrients like creatine and carnosine, which are very important for building and repairing muscle as well as for brain function. Red meat is also enriched with bioavailable iron, selenium and zinc as well as vitamin B12, B3 and B6.
However, the way cows are fed can have a major effect on the nutrient composition of the beef.
1) Grass-fed beef has several additional nutritional benefits over grain-fed. It contains more:
2) Grass-fed usually contains less total fat than grain-fed beef, which means that gram for gram, grass-fed beef contains fewer calories. But the major difference is the composition of the fatty acids. Both grass-fed and grain-fed contain similar amounts of saturated and monounsaturated fats as well as omega-6 Polyunsaturated Fats. However, grass-fed is superior in that is contains.
The bottom line is that both grass-fed and grain-fed beef are highly nutritious. However, grass-fed beef contains a lot more Omega-3 fatty acids and CLA, which are both very beneficial for health. We recommend you try both to see which one you prefer.
